Discovering Hickory

Our local hidden gem

By Leslie Sullivan

Small Town, Big Character

As a West Coast native, discovering Hickory has been a delightful adventure. Tucked away in western North Carolina, Hickory is truly a hidden gem with a rich history and vibrant culture. Founded in the 1850s, Hickory began as a modest tavern built beneath a large hickory tree—hence the name "Hickory Tavern." Over time, it grew into what is now known as the "Furniture Capital," a title it still proudly holds today. The city is renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and is even home to a full-scale mall dedicated entirely to furniture shopping. Throughout Hickory, you’ll find neighborhoods that reflect the architectural influences of early German settlers. Areas like Oakwood, Hillcrest, Forest Hills, Green Park, and Claremont are perfect examples of this historical charm, featuring unique homes and tree-lined streets.

A Thriving Community

In recent years, Hickory has blossomed into a top destination, known for fostering a vibrant, inclusive community with something for everyone. Downtown Hickory has transformed into a lively hub full of local boutiques, art galleries, live music, theater, and fantastic dining options. The city is also home to a growing craft beer scene that locals and visitors love to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home here. Hickory boasts numerous parks, tennis and pickle ball courts, golf courses, Frisbee golf, and mountain biking trails. Just outside the city is Lake Hickory, a beautiful 4,000-acre lake that offers year-round boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.

Education is a cornerstone of the community. Hickory is home to top-rated public schools as well as several higher education institutions, including Lenoir-Rhyne University, Catawba Valley Community College, and a satellite campus of Appalachian State University. The SALT Block—Hickory’s arts and cultural hub—houses a science center, art museum, library, symphony, choral society, and the United Arts Council of Catawba County. For those interested in history, don’t miss the Hickory Aviation Museum. And for nature lovers, the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains provide unforgettable views and endless outdoor adventures throughout the year. Ask me what I love most about Hickory and Catawba County—there’s so much to share, and I’d love to tell you all about it!

Have we met yet?

I’m Leslie. I’m a North Carolina transplant but I’ve made Hickory my home and I just love this area. With my friends and family, I’m known as the guru on the newest spot to eat or where you should go when you’re looking for something specific.

“HIGHLY RECOMMEND!”

So devoted to her customers and with quick response to her customer needs. Her knowledge of the area and understanding of our needs were dead on couldn't ask for a better experience with buying property and her wiliness to help us after the buy to look for rental property after our buying experience, she never stopped showing us how much she cares, made us fill like we were her only clients. Highly recommended. Can't express enough her ability to provide services that fulfill your needs.
